Geranium
Geranium is a herbaceous perennial, often evergreen, with decorative foliage. It should not be confused with the plants commonly called geraniums that belong to the genus Pelargonium, typically grown on balconies.
Originating from North America and Europe, Geranium is cold-hardy. It therefore needs no special winter care and also withstands higher temperatures.
Flowering occurs in spring and summer in a range of shades from purple to white.

Geranium flowers
Usually, the flowers are arranged in pairs and carried on long stalks. They consist of five green sepals, often slightly downy, and the same number of petals, either separate or joined together.
Colours range from pink, to white, through to burgundy, fuchsia, lilac and brilliant blue. A way to enhance any space!
Soil and exposure
Geranium generally prefers rich, well-drained soil, ideally with a neutral or slightly acidic pH. However, it also adapts to clay soils, provided they drain well.
Exposure varies according to the Geranium species, but a sunny or at least bright position is generally preferable for prolonged flowering.
Watering and pruning
Water when the soil is almost dry. It is important to water at the base of the plant, avoiding excessive wetting of the leaves and flowers to help prevent fungal diseases.
Generally, the various species do not require any particular feeding, unless they are grown in pots.
Pruning is not essential. However, if needed, it can be done before growth resumes: remove dead growth and reshape the clump if necessary.
