Undisputed queens among climbing plants, Clematis are often combined with roses to cover walls, fences, trellises or the trunks of old trees. They are cold-hardy and need bright, sunny positions with soil that stays cool and moist at the base. With a little targeted care, Clematis bring colour and life to the garden or any other space you wish to decorate. Combining different varieties and species allows you to enjoy a profusion of flowers for almost the entire year.

How to grow Clematis in pots

Clematis can be grown both in the ground and in pots. For container growing, choose a pot that is wide and deep enough: we recommend one measuring at least 35–40 cm in diameter and depth. 

To improve drainage and protect the roots from excess water that may accidentally collect in the saucer, spread a 5 cm layer of expanded clay at the bottom of the pot. Then cover it with a potting compost specifically for flowering plants.

When is the right time to plant Clematis?  

The ideal time is spring or from late summer into autumn. We recommend avoiding transplanting during the hottest season, as Clematis would find it very difficult to establish, even if well watered.

How long does Clematis flowering last?

Clematis have different flowering periods depending on the species and variety: some flower early, in late winter, while others are much later and produce their first flowers in midsummer.
