Where to plant Cistus?

Cistus loves dry, nutrient-poor soil, with a sunny exposure (preferably not windy). In fact, it's a plant that doesn't tolerate waterlogging, preferring well-drained soil that dries out very easily.

Additionally, it's a plant that prefers sunny locations. It's not particularly bothered by cold: only in mountainous climates might it need protection during winter.

Cistus grows luxuriantly even in pots or planters. Whatever the location, it's essential that the soil is lean, well-drained, and has a substrate of gravel or sand.

When does Cistus bloom?

Flowering occurs in spring-summer: the bushes take on a very dense and full rounded shape, suitable for Mediterranean gardens. In favorable seasons, flowering is so intense that the plants are always covered in flowers!

The flowers have five petals and can be of different colors: magenta red, white, lilac, and pink.

When to prune Cistus?

Pruning should be very limited, done in late winter and when poorly oriented shoots emerge (after flowering). However, it's important to only remove broken or dead branches.

To encourage bushiness, young plants can be pinched back in spring. When the bark is mature, it's crucial to avoid heavy pruning.
